Animal-Safe Easter: How to Keep Your Pets Happy, Healthy & Out of Trouble This Holiday

Easter might be all sunshine, sweets, and Sunday roasts for us… but for your pets? It can be a sneaky mix of overstimulation, chocolate crumbs, and escapees.
Whether you’ve got a fluffy feline, a cheeky dog, or a curious cockatoo - this no-fuss guide will help you prep for a safe and stress-free Easter. We’re talking about the foods to avoid, activities they can enjoy, and how to handle guests or travel plans without disrupting your fur family.
Because Easter should be fun and festive for the whole pack.

The Naughty List: What To Keep Out Of Paw’s Reach
Let’s start with the big one - Easter treats. Tempting for us, terrifying for your pets.
1. Chocolate (All Shapes, All Forms):
We know you know, but it’s worth repeating: chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs and cats. The theobromine and caffeine found in chocolate can cause everything from vomiting to seizures and even death. Make sure every bunny (and their eggs) are kept well out of pet-sniffing range.
2. Hot Cross Buns (and Grapes):
Delicious? Yes. Dangerous? Also yes. Raisins, sultanas, and grapes can cause acute kidney failure in dogs. Even one or two can be harmful, so please don’t share your Easter morning tea with your pup.
3. Lilies:
It's lovely to fill the home with flowers during festive seasons, but lilies - whilst beautiful - are deadly to cats. Even licking pollen off their fur or drinking water from the vase can cause kidney failure. Skip them altogether or opt for pet-safe alternatives.
4. Plastic Easter Grass and Decorations:
Looks great in a basket, but a total nightmare if swallowed. These decorations can cause intestinal blockages, choking, or internal damage. If you're decorating, be vigilant about tidying up - and supervising curious pets.
Important Tips For When The Guests Arrive
Family gatherings, squealing children, and changes to routine can really throw your pet off. A bit of planning can make a big difference.
1. Create a Quiet Zone:
Designate a pet-only space where they can retreat if things get too loud. Think: a cosy bed, familiar toys, fresh water, and no visitors. This is especially helpful for anxious pets or those not used to a full house.
2. Stick to Routine:
As much as possible, keep feeding, walking, and sleeping times the same. Predictability = calm pets. If you're having guests over, consider exercising your dog beforehand to burn off excess energy.
3. Set the Ground Rules:
Let guests know your pet safety rules. No sneaky table treats, no leaving chocolate in handbags on the floor, and no letting the dog out the front door for “a little explore”.
Fun (and Safe) Easter Activities for Pets
Easter can still be fun for your pets - with a little creativity and caution.
1. Pet-Friendly Easter Egg Hunt:
Yes, this is a thing! Hide carrot slices, dog biscuits, or catnip toys in plastic eggs (with supervision) around the yard or house. Watching your dog or cat sniff them out is just as fun as the kids’ version!
2. Build a DIY Pet Easter Basket:
Swap the chocolate eggs for squeaky toys, puzzle feeders, or a fresh bag of treats. If your pet’s into it, include a cute (but safe and comfy) Easter bandana or outfit.
3. Dress-Up Time?
Not all pets love a costume, but if yours doesn’t mind, snap some adorable pics of them in bunny ears or a pastel bow tie. Just make sure any accessories are safe and don’t restrict movement or breathing.
Travelling With Pets This Easter? Read This First.
Whether you're road-tripping with your furry friend or jetting off without them, a little planning goes a long way in keeping them safe and stress-free during the holiday.
1. Keep Their ID Up-To-Date:
Easter can bring new environments, visitors, and the odd open door - making it easier for pets to wander off. Before you travel, double-check that your pet's microchip details are current and that they’re wearing a secure collar with a clear, legible ID tag.
2. Travel Safely:
If your pet is coming along for the adventure, ensure they're safely restrained in the car with a pet seatbelt or secure crate. And remember: never leave them alone in a parked car, especially in warmer weather. Even a few minutes can be dangerous.
3. Leaving The Pets At Home?
Not all pets love travelling, and that’s okay. If your animal is happier staying in their familiar environment, make sure they’re properly cared for in your absence.
